Meeting with the Cabinet of Commissioner Dalli: A step towards the officialisation of the 29 EU National Sign Languages as official EU languages.

EUD

On 8th November 2024, our EUD Policy Manager, Mr Alexandre Bloxs, had a meeting with Ms Nora Bednarski, special advisor on disability issues to Commissioner for Equality Helena Dalli.

The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the newly published EUD Position Paper on EU National Sign Languages as official EU Languages. More specifically, they discussed the EU legal framework surrounding the right of deaf people to their national sign language and how this right is embedded in the EU Multilingualism policy.

Furthermore, they reflected on the next steps and strategies to implement this position paper to make our long-term goal a reality. These strategies involve reaching out to the new College of Commissioner, closely working with the Secretariat of the European Parliament as well as with the Committee on Petition and, ultimately, working with the Council of the European Union. These are a few of the many works that await EUD to implement our long-term objective of having the 29 EU National Sign Languages becoming official EU languages.

As Ms Nora Bednarski is stepping down from her position of advisor of Commissioner Dalli due to the constitution of a new College of Commissioner and the reshuffling of all cabinets, we would like to sincerely thank Ms Nora Bednarski for her invaluable time, recommendations and support of the deaf community.
