The European Union of the Deaf (EUD) has submitted an alternative report to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) Committee as part of the EU’s second review cycle. The report, developed in collaboration with 31 National Associations of the Deaf (NADs) and civil society organisations, highlights the perspective of the European deaf community on the EU’s response to the CRPD List of Issues.
The report underscores key recommendations, including the recognition of 29 national sign languages (NSLs) as official EU languages and addresses gaps in EU legislation that affect equality, accessibility, and non-discrimination for deaf people. The report also outlines measures needed to ensure deaf people’s full participation in areas such as emergency services, employment, and access to information.
This landmark document reflects EUD’s ongoing efforts to ensure that EU policies fully align with the CRPD, protecting both the linguistic and cultural rights of deaf individuals and their status as persons with disabilities.
