On 26 September, Charlotte Olhausen, EUD Policy Officer, attended a key meeting organised by the European Disability Forum (EDF) and the International Disability Alliance (IDA) regarding the upcoming review of the European Union (EU) by the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). The meeting outlined the timeline and processes for the review, which will be finalised in March 2025.
The meeting, led by Juan Ignacio Perez Bello (IDA), provided essential updates on the CRPD Committee’s programme of work, including crucial dates and guidance for organisations of persons with disabilities (OPDs) and civil society organisations (CSOs) involved in the review that will take place between 9 and 12 March 2025.
EUD has already submitted its own alternative report highlighting the specific situation faced by the more than a million deaf people in the European Union.
We will contribute to EDF’s alternative report and support the CRPD Committee in providing the perspective of deaf people in the challenges faced by persons with disabilities during the implementation of the CRPD by the EU.
In that regard, we will work closely with EDF and IDA in the coming months to coordinate efforts and ensure that the voice of the Deaf community is strongly represented in the process.
